Construction activities for changing the Akkulam tourist village in the district to an adventure tourism center of international standards are in progress.

The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Nehru Yuva Kendra, and the Youth Brigade Entrepreneurs Development Society, are leading this project. The project would encourage the spirit of adventure among the youth as well as adventure sports, and contribute toward bringing young folks from weaker sections into entrepreneurial leadership positions.

Youth from tribal communities in Kerala will be identified, given entrepreneurial training, and brought under the aegis of small-scale units. The adventure tourism activities will be managed by the youth collective Adventure Tourism and Disaster Management Service.

Adventure sports like rappelling, river crossing, rock climbing will be installed at Akkulam with advanced equipment. Trips in a coracle and training in swimming will also be prepared. Youngsters will be able to enjoy campfire weekly. There would also be sale of tribal handicrafts.
