The UP government is on a mission to explore the tourism prospective of historical and heritage sites from the Mahabharata period to the struggle for independence.

As part of this mission, thestate government is improving the Mahabharata Circuit and Bundelkhand. The government aims to increase awareness on UP’s rich historical heritage and remind them about the lost and forgotten accounts of its heroes like Rani Laxmibai and Maharaja Suheldev.

The principal secretary of tourism MukeshMeshram said that efforts are being made for the betterment of infrastructure and tourist facilities in phased manner at all important historical sites as assured in BJP’s 2022 poll manifesto for tourist suitability.

The UP government is also trying to promote the sites as brands for luring visitors.

“Work is underway to build bronze statue of Maharaja Suheldev riding a 40 feet high horse in Bahraich at the cost of about Rs 45 crore. DPR for proposed light and sound show at Maharaja BijliPasi Fort in Lucknow is being prepared,”Meshramsaid.

Places of historical significance would get a facelift. The land of Bundelkhand is tantamountto courage and culture. In this dry area, the beautiful pond at Charkhari (Mahoba) built by the Chandel Dynasty, which never dries up, is a major tourist attraction. Kalinjar Fort at Banda and heritage sites in Jhansi, Deogarh and Lalitpurarecenters of attraction for domestic and foreign tourists. Chunar Fort in Mirzapur is also a big attraction for tourists while Hastinapur, Kampilya (Farrukhabad), Barnwa (Baghpat), Mathura, Kaushambhi, Gonda and Ahichchhatra remind people of the Mahabharata period.
